Statement: Why do I paint? Because I have to.

I grew up listening to folk music and asking a lot of questions. What constitutes folk music? I dunno. What is a folk song? I know that one. A folk song is a song that tells a story. I Imagine I knew that, though less abstractly than would be considered romantic. I like telling stories, too. I try in some way to do that through painting, but since everything is a process and not merely an excuse, I try to get out of the way as much as possible and let the painting be what it wants to be. I rely on it to tell its own story, play its own song. My part is the easy stuff; the value schemes, the directionality, the found surfaces, the semiotics, and the depth of field or lack of, sometimes called flatness. Something always happens when paint meets medium. Always. Always. The only exception is when the two do not meet. In a landscape of sleeping color, corduroy drama, digital art and trumpet vines the truant wind still blows. My paintings are my conscious so I do what I have to do. Why do I paint? For the same reason.
